One of the joys of cross stitch is how little you need to begin. A scrap of fabric, some thread and a needle will get you stitching. That said, a handful of good tools makes the craft far more comfortable, and knowing what actually matters saves you from buying things you will never use. Here is what belongs in a well-stocked kit.
The true essentials
These are the things you genuinely cannot stitch without.
Fabric

Thread
Stranded cotton in the colours your pattern calls for. DMC is the most widely stocked and the brand most charts are written for. You separate the six strands and use two for most stitching. See our guide to thread brands for the full picture.
Needles
Use a tapestry needle, which has a blunt tip and a large eye. The blunt point slips between the fabric threads instead of splitting them, and the big eye is easy to thread. A size 24 suits 14 count Aida well. Sharp sewing needles are the wrong tool and will snag the weave.
Scissors
A small, sharp pair of embroidery scissors for snipping thread close to the fabric. Keep them for thread only, since cutting paper blunts them quickly. A larger pair for cutting fabric is handy too.
A pattern
Finally, something to stitch. A clear chart with a good colour key makes all the difference, especially when you are learning to read a pattern.
Very useful, but optional
You can start without these, but most stitchers add them quickly.
A hoop or frame
A hoop holds your fabric taut, which keeps your tension even and your stitches neat. A simple wooden or plastic hoop is inexpensive and makes stitching much more comfortable. Larger projects may call for a frame instead of a hoop.
Good light and magnification
A daylight lamp reduces eye strain enormously, especially for evening stitching or finer counts. A clip-on magnifier helps on detailed work. Your eyes will thank you.
A needle threader and needle minder
A needle threader speeds up rethreading, and a needle minder, a small magnet, gives your needle a safe home between sessions so it does not vanish into the sofa.
Nice-to-have extras
Once you are hooked, these small luxuries make life easier:
